UPDATE: 3/29/2023 The City of Philadelphia has declared the water safe to drink. The safety concerns around tap water have all been lifted.
After yesterday’s announcements of a possible water contamination from a latex spill in the Bucks County creek, residents of Philadelphia wasted no time stocking up on bottled water. But, what about our pets? Will they be safe and what precautions can pet owners take to protect their pets? Whether or not you stocked up on bottled water, there are a few steps you can take today.
The good news? As of 3/27/23, officials said the city’s tap water would be safe to drink at least through Monday night. This means that you should stock up on tap water by bottling it yourself. Use any containers you have. These will provide a nice back up plan if the water becomes unsafe.
If you are unsure what measure to take, we recommend calling your veterinarian’s office for their advice. We did just that. Our vet recommended following all guidelines being put in place by the city’s officials and out of an abundance we can use bottled water or fill up empty containers with tap water. Of course, this is pending any new information that may arise.
At Philly Pet Care, we will be using bottled water for any pet sits we are covering for the remainder of the week. This will provide a small piece of mind to ensure everyone’s safety while this is being sorted out. Wishing everyone the best!
